Battlefields Day Tour
Encounter museums, memorials and fields dedicated to Anglo Zulu Wars on this battlefield tour
Service Description
The Isandlwana Battlefield and Museum is reached northward on this route from Durban. The British Empire invaded Zululand at the beginning of January 1879 in order to advance their goal of colonial expansion throughout Southern Africa. In response, the indigenous Zulu Kingdom stunned the British at the Battle of Isandlwana with a well-planned onslaught. Historians believe that this historic conflict marked the beginning of the Anglo-Zulu War since it was recorded as being brutal and deadly. At the Battle of Isandlwana, the British Empire suffered a crushing loss, losing more than 1700 soldiers to a Zulu army that numbered 20,000. The British troops were vastly outnumbered by the Zulu warriors, despite the British having better weapons than the spears and leather shields the Zulus used. The Battle of Rorke's Drift, which took place on January 22, 1879, following the Battle of Isandlwana, is the next stop on the trip. Compared to the Battle of Isandlwana, fewer fighters participated in the Defence of Rorke's Drift: an estimated 150 British and 3000–4000 Zulu fighters. The Zulu fighters were repelled by the British soldiers, who so prevailed. Before returning to Durban, we stop at Fugitives Drift and the Queens Colours memorial.
